View from the choir

I am a Catholic layperson and Secular Franciscan with a sense of humor. After years in the back pew watching, I have moved into the choir. It's nice to see faces instead of the backs of heads. But I still maintain God has a sense of humor - and that we are created in God's image.

Planned Parenthood - Praying Twice!

Today I had two opportunities to pray outside Planned Parenthood.

This morning I joined the regular group at the Planned Parenthood in Greece, N.Y., to pray. We said a Rosary and a Divine Chaplet, among other prayers.

Then this afternoon I joined with another group to march through downtown Rochester to Planned Parenthood's headquarters on University Avenue. Another Rosary!

There are so many committed, prayerful people here: Planned Parenthood doesn't stand a chance!

President Obama and Planned Parenthood

Given his pattern of dropping friends as soon as they start to prove politically embarrassing, does the recent revelations concerning Planned Parenthood mean President Obama will soon be severing his close ties to the abortion giant?

Obama Pushes Abortion Unhealth Care

President Obama has now offered his version of health (sic) care reform. Not surprisingly, his version is similar to the pro-abortion Senate proposal.

His bill provides a starting point for discussion at the upcoming health care summit - that's likely to be the argument his administration will make. But there are hints that if pro-lifers and Republicans (not synonymous, by the way) don't go along with what he wants, he might just seek a procedural way to ram it through.

Planned Parenthood and other pro-abortion groups and individuals will undoubtedly applaud - and contribute to his 2012 campaign.

We need some health care reform, but without the protections for life and conscience, his proposed bill is unacceptable.

Pro-Choice Violence: Lila Rose assaulted

Live Action Films president Lila Rose has filed a police report after she was allegedly struck by a Planned Parenthood escort outside a San Jose abortion center.

Rose was on a public sidewalk outside the Planned Parenthood affiliate at 1691 The Alameda. She was praying with a group and offering information to women entering the abortion center on Thursday when she got into an exchange with a uniformed escort, who recognized her as the investigator in the Live Action videos, which expose Planned Parenthood workers breaking laws and lying to young women who say they are seeking abortions.

According to the police report filed at the scene - corroborated by witnesses - Rose said, "Sir, are you familiar with the abortion procedure?"

The Planned Parenthood escort allegedly approached Rose and said, "You idiot. You've caused so much trouble. You piece of crap."

According to the police report, Rose offered to show the escort a picture, saying, "Can I show you a picture of what it really does to a baby?"

At that point, the Planned Parenthood escort allegedly struck Rose's hand, knocking literature and a Bible to the ground. Rose then reportedly stepped further back onto sidewalk, and the escort, who was visibly upset according to the report, stepped towards her saying, "It's a woman's choice!"

Rose responded, "What about the baby's choice?"

At that point the escort said, "It's not a baby!" Then the escort walked away.

Police were then called and interviewed the Rose and several witnesses. Rose sustained no injuries from the attack. Charges of assault and battery are pending.

Maybe the escort's violent response was due to a nagging conscience that was trying to deny the reality of what he was helping to do to those babies. Let us pray for him and all others caught up in the violence of abortion.

Planned Parenthood director quits over abortion

This was just too powerful not to post something. Her description of the child fighting for its life brings starkly home the reality of abortion. I'm so glad Huckabee interviewed her.

Planned Parenthood Exposed

Lila Rose was on Life on the Rock last night talking about her efforts to show how Planned Parenthood violates the law and is willing to conceal rape and sexual abuse in the name of abortion. She showed some clips from undercover videos she shot when posing as a pregnant 13-year-old going to Planned Parenthood clinics.

Her efforts have led to Planned Parenthood staff getting fired, and to criminal investigations.

You can read more about what she is doing and see the videos she has released (more are in the works!) at Live Action Films. Her efforts have exposed Planned Parenthood in a number of states. Her picture is now posted in some clinics like a wanted poster!

I've had contact with Planned Parenthood deception twice.

Back when I was a reporter, I covered the effort of the local Planned Parenthood to add a "health clinic" to its headquarters here in Rochester. They kept saying it was not an abortion clinic, but I dug through plans, documents, filings with the state, and found evidence that it did include abortion services. I confronted the local head of Planned Parenthood, who fudged, dodged and basically lied in response to my questions. It all got approved anyway, and now the "health clinic" is one of the main providers of abortions locally.

When I returned to teaching, I was in public school. For sex education, the principal invited Planned Parenthood in to give a presentation.

I listened carefully, and afterwards confronted the Planned Parenthood presenter, pointing out important details she had excluded when it came to birth control - which, of course, she was essentially promoting. She admitted she had left things out. She said she wanted to keep things simple for the students, and did not want to confuse them. (Confuse them with the facts?) I reported our conversation to my principal.

The following year, Planned Parenthood was back, only this time the representative did allude to some of the issues I'd raised -only to mock and dismiss them.

After all, kids will be kids, kids will have sex, and health/mental/emotional concerns are secondary when it comes to providing them with materials to help encourage them to continue having sex - and to help Planned Parenthood make money.

Thanks, Planned Parenthood

The United States Catholic Conference of Bishops (USCCB) had sent letters to all members of Congress with criteria for a healthcare bill they could support. All amendments to specifically exclude abortion had been defeated in committees, and all rational observers acknowledge that the bills as allow for - and probably will lead to - abortion coverage (despite false claims to the contrary by President Obama and some members of Congress). So in their letters, the bishops warn that the healthcare reform bills leave the door open for mandated abortion coverage and taxpayer funding of abortion.

Well, that brought a response from Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood :

"Seems that, if the U.S. Conference had its way, the national health care system would make American women second-class citizens and deny them access to benefits they currently have."

Hmm. Seems to me she is confirming that health care reform does include abortion coverage. She must not have the administration's playbook ("Fabricate, and keep fabricating even if caught. The general public won't catch on.")

I'm not the only one to see that: Father Thomas Eutenauer, President of Human Life International, noted:

"Ms. Richards has done a favor to all pro-lifers and people of good faith in her hate-filled rant against the shepherds of our beloved Church...First, she has reminded everyone that, despite President Obama's recent statements to the contrary, abortion is absolutely going to be covered in any health care reform legislation that crosses his desk."

Thank you, Planned Parenthood. Keep talking.

Planned Parenthood Office Fined For False Billing

While some Planned Paranthood office have been implicated in taking money to abort blacks, concealing rape, or violating state laws, one office has been found guilty of a different offense: overbilling for abortions and other "services."

An audit has revealed that Planned Parenthood's abortion business in Spokane, Washington, overbilled Medicaid $630,000 for abortions, birth control, condoms, and more between 2004 and 2007. With interest added, the office has been fined $700,000.

According to the audit, state health officials found Planned Parenthood of Spokane was "unbundling" abortion claims and falsely billing for doctor visits when customers were picking up prescriptions.

The audit discovered a number of questionable practices.

One involved "unbundling" post-abortion drugs and billing them to Medicaid as family planning, which is prohibited.

Other cases included billings for pregnancy tests done on women who never said they thought they were pregnant and without any indication the tests were medically necessary.

The office also apparently overbilled on fraudulent birth control prescriptions or for drugs sold without a prescription, billing for more than three times the cost of condoms, and billing office visits to pick up a prescription or get an injection.

One wonders how much the fine would have been if the audit had covered more years?

I'd also be curious to find out if other offices also did this sort of thing.

Planned Parenthhood closes six Texas clinics

According to news accounts, Planned Parenthood closed its six El Paso, Texas, clinics on June 26.

Analinda Moreno, interim executive director of the clinics, said money trouble led to the shutdown.

This is a step in the right direction.

First, we must make sure adequate REAL health care is in place for women, then we need to pray and work to make sure Planned Parenthood clinics across the nation close - unless they change their death-dealing ways.

One way is to cut off their money - which means getting the government to stop giving them our tax dollars.

Planned Parenthood willing to conceal rape - yet again

Lila Rose caught Planned Parenthood - the billion dollar abortion business - once again willing to break the law, this time a clinic in Birmingham, Alabama. Once again, a PP worker basically says they will not report a rape - sex between an adult and a minor - and is willing to fudge the law to allow a non-guardian to approve an abortion, even though Alabama law requires the consent of a guardian.

This is the seventh Planned Parenthood she's caught. How much tax payer money goes to PP? How much of our money goes to help concealing rape?

Judy Blume Insults Mothers

Planned Parenthood, the billion-dollar abortion business, sent out the following letter allegedly from Judy Blume (with a few comment from me in bold):

Dear Friend,

If you are the daughter whose mom had the guts to give you the answers to questions you couldn't quite figure out how to ask...

If you are the son whose mother raised you to love and respect your sisters and wives and daughters...
(That's why I'm pro-life, not pro-abortion.)

If you know a mother who is struggling to raise strong, independent, and confident children in the face of unbelievable odds... (Give her some help, not dishonor her in this way.)

...Say thanks. Say thanks this Mother's Day with a gift that honors her courage by making a donation to the Planned Parenthood Action Fund in her name. I guarantee you that she'll be pleased. I know I would be. (My mom would have given me a pained look had I insulted her this way.)

I'm a mom, and I'm also a writer and an activist. Nothing has made me prouder than seeing my own children — and really, all young people — grow up to be healthy, educated, and in charge of their bodies and their lives. That's where Planned Parenthood comes in. There is no organization that I know of that supports motherhood and all that it means more than Planned Parenthood. (On the Bizarro World, maybe.) That's why I'm honoring (?!?!??)moms everywhere with my gift to the Planned Parenthood Action Fund today.

It's not easy to be a mother these days.
(Planned Parenthood is working hard to make it easy not to be a mother these days - with they help of tax dollars.) And right now — with more and more women seeking care from Planned Parenthood health centers — we need to do all we can to support them. (Including centers that break the law and conceal rape.) By honoring a mother in your life with a gift to the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, you'll be making a gift that protects and advocates for the health of millions of mothers and families. That's a gift any mother will appreciate.

Sincerely,
Judy Blume

Planned Parenthood and Mother's Day? What an insult to mothers everywhere.

As for Blume, if this is indeed a letter from her (you never can tell when Planned Parenthood is involved), another reason not to read her books.

Gianna Jessen - Aborted, But Alive

I interviewed her many years ago when she was just a teen speaking out against abortion.

An aborted teen.

Her mother went to Planned Parenthood, the billion-dollar abortion business, and had a saline abortion. But she lived.

She was just a "blob of tissue" - at least from Planned Parenthood's point of view (or, was she actually just another blob of profit?).

Now, she is a thorn in their side. And President Obama's.

Praying for Life - Dealing with a Dilemma

I went down to Planned Parenthood this morning for the pro-life prayer rally to be lead by Pastor Luke Robinson.

It was a cold, miserable day - 35 with mixed rain and snow, and a biting wind.

About 25 pro-lifers braved the weather to offer prayers and hymns, and to hear a few words from Pastor Robinson.

The last time we gathered there - when the weather was nicer - we had more than 100 people taking part in a prayer vigil. There were about 30 counter-protesters.

This time, the other side was represented by ...
(Hear any crickets?)

Pastor Robinson proclaimed "We are here, oh Lord, for every baby that is saved by people who stand (outside the clinics)."

He offered prayers not only for the victims of abortion - the women and the babies killed -but also the victims of violence, including those who died in the recent nursing home shooting, and the killing Friday of 13 people at a center for new immigrants in Binghamton.

He also prayed that the politicians who support abortion, the personnel in the clinics might themselves experience the mental anguish, the trouble sleep, the problems that some many women who have had abortions face so that they might begin to understand what they are doing and turn from the killing of babies.

And he asked God to shut down this Planned Parenthood clinic, and vowed that he would return to join us for a celebration when it does close.

Amen.

I enjoyed the prayers. I was happy to say a rosary with some of the the other people there.

But I left saddened, and thinking.

I stopped taking pictures when a couple of the people brought out the aborted baby pictures. I prayed from that point on with my eyes closed or averted.

I don't like such images. They offend me on many levels.

The offend me because of the violence they reveal, the horrible things done to the poor babies.

They offend me because they are so horrible. I don't like graphic images (I've even been known to walk out of or turn off some movies).

But they also offend me because they are violent, and I don't want to be part of violence.

Yes, I know there are arguments for them. They do reveal what an abortion is like - and some people need images to help shock them into thinking about what is being done. People too often hide from reality, they seek to escape it - after all, isn't abortion on one level just another way to avoid dealing with a reality one does not want to face? So such graphic images may help to get some people to turn.

But in confronting, isn't there a danger that we are closing minds? Aren't we making it harder for others to convert?

As I watched vehicles go by, I thought about the children in some of them. As a parent I would have been angry had someone showed such things to my daughters when they were young.

And, sadly, when I have seen people display such images, there seems to be such anger on some of their faces.

Is this the most loving thing we can do?

I'm sure that there are people who will argue that it is. Sometimes you need to be hard to break through closed minds. We are trying to save lives and souls.

Indeed, I could easily fall into using such tactics myself -a part of myself that I don't like. I can come across as such an angry guy.

But I battle that tendency in myself, and I believe it is the wrong approach in the fight for life.

In my own stumbling way, I want to try to witness to God's love in all that I do and say.

Rev. Robinson to lead rally at Planned Parenthood

The local pro-lifers are preparing to rally at Planned Parenthood, the billion dollar abortion business, again.

Pastor Luke Robinson, a dynamic African American activist and pastor, will be speaking at Bethel Christian Fellowship April 3, and then will lead a Pro-life Rally at Planned Parenthood April 4.

Pastor Robinson electrified the crowd at the 2009 March for Life in Washington. He will focus on the topic Wake Up Rochester! Let’s be more than pro-life. Let’s be a VOICE! in his Friday talk at Bethel, 321 East Avenue, from 7-9 p.m.

On Saturday, he will take part in a 10-11 a.m. rally at Planned Parenthood, 114 University Avenue.

I took part in the last rally rally at Planned Parenthood (see my post of Feb. 28). It involved more than 100 prayerful pro-lifers, and a small but vocal group of counter-protesters.

Maybe we'll have an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Perhaps an abortion supporter will ask us who painted the original.

It's called miraculous for a reason

Prior to receiving the Margaret Sanger Award from Planned Parenthood, the billion-dollar abortion business, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was in Mexico where she stopped at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. She left a bouquet of white flowers “on behalf of the American people,” which was a nice gesture.

But then ...

She asked who painted the miraculous image of Our Lady.

?#@?

Okay, she's not Catholic. I'll give her a pass.

Monsignor Diego Monroy, the rector of the basilica, had taken her to view the famous image when she asked the question.

He responded: "God!"

Catechetical moment here: The image of Our Lady of Guadalupe was miraculously imprinted by Mary on the tilma (cloak) of St. Juan Diego in 1531. Among the unexplainable phenomena associated with it: The appearance on Mary’s eyes of those present in the room when the tilma was opened, and the image has not decayed in nearly 500 years. And it is linked with the pro-life movement.

When she left the basilica later, Mrs. Clinton reportedly said to some of the Mexicans gathered outside, “You have a marvelous virgin!”

Okay.

Then it was off to Planned Parenthood, where I suspect virginity is not as highly valued. After all, it could interfere with lifestyle choices --- and profits.

Planned Parenthood - and Infanticide

An undercover video by Students for Life shows a Planned Parenthood worker admitting that sometimes aborted babies are born alive, and are just allowed to die.

Infanticide.

The sort of thing that President Obama wanted to allow when he was a state senator (a vote about which he lied).
