View from the choir

I am a Catholic layperson and Secular Franciscan with a sense of humor. After years in the back pew watching, I have moved into the choir. It's nice to see faces instead of the backs of heads. But I still maintain God has a sense of humor - and that we are created in God's image.

Pro-Choice Violence in Rochester

At the Stations of the Cross for Life this morning here in Rochester (at which some 200 people took part in a prayer service then prayed the Stations as the processed to a doctor's office where abortions are performed) I chanced to talk to some people who had been praying outside Planned Parenthood's local headquarters yesterday.

They told me that a woman in a car became enraged at them, yelling at them. Then she threw eggs at them - striking at least two people, including one woman in the face.

Planned Parenthood's security reportedly watched the incident, but did not intervene and then discretely drove away before police arrived (and they'd have to admit what they witnessed?).

One pro-lifer followed the alleged attacker and got her license number.

Apparently, the police were not going to do anything - until a lawyer for the pro-lifers made a call to police officials. Police then reportedly went to the alleged assailant's home, and she admitted everything.

The pro-lifers were debating whether to press charges. One factor they are considering in all this is that such incidents keep happening - pro-choice violence - but don't always get action taken or media coverage. Yet the media keeps fanning the flames with claims of pro-life violence (even though incidents of pro-life violence are far less frequent than those of pro-choice violence).

Further, the pro-lifers are justifiably concerned about whether the next incident would involve more than just eggs. There have been a number of physical attacks on pro-lifers across the country in recent months.

There's also concern about the woman. Was her action prompted by her own pain? Does she need support or healing? The pro-lifers hope they might get a chance to reach out to her to help her.

I'll monitor the newspaper to see if this violence gets any coverage.

I'll also monitor to see if our Stations today will get any coverage.

Pro-Choice Violence: Lila Rose assaulted

Live Action Films president Lila Rose has filed a police report after she was allegedly struck by a Planned Parenthood escort outside a San Jose abortion center.

Rose was on a public sidewalk outside the Planned Parenthood affiliate at 1691 The Alameda. She was praying with a group and offering information to women entering the abortion center on Thursday when she got into an exchange with a uniformed escort, who recognized her as the investigator in the Live Action videos, which expose Planned Parenthood workers breaking laws and lying to young women who say they are seeking abortions.

According to the police report filed at the scene - corroborated by witnesses - Rose said, "Sir, are you familiar with the abortion procedure?"

The Planned Parenthood escort allegedly approached Rose and said, "You idiot. You've caused so much trouble. You piece of crap."

According to the police report, Rose offered to show the escort a picture, saying, "Can I show you a picture of what it really does to a baby?"

At that point, the Planned Parenthood escort allegedly struck Rose's hand, knocking literature and a Bible to the ground. Rose then reportedly stepped further back onto sidewalk, and the escort, who was visibly upset according to the report, stepped towards her saying, "It's a woman's choice!"

Rose responded, "What about the baby's choice?"

At that point the escort said, "It's not a baby!" Then the escort walked away.

Police were then called and interviewed the Rose and several witnesses. Rose sustained no injuries from the attack. Charges of assault and battery are pending.

Maybe the escort's violent response was due to a nagging conscience that was trying to deny the reality of what he was helping to do to those babies. Let us pray for him and all others caught up in the violence of abortion.

More pro-abortion violence

A 69-year old man was allegedly assaulted by two women on Saturday as he held two non-graphic signs protesting abortion.

This comes just about a week after Jim Pouillon was murdered for his pro-life views.

In the latest pro-abortion attack, Johnny Wallace was allegedly attacked by the two 48-year-old women in Flagstaff, Arizona. He was in front of City Hall holding text-only signs that read, "Abortion kills more black Americans in four days than the Klan killed in 150 years," and "Life begins at conception and ends at Planned Parenthood."

Wallace was allegedly approached from behind by the two women, who began by yelling profanities at him. One then attempted to take way and destroy his sign.

Wallace was wrestled to the ground, and then the other woman allegedly joined the attack.

Wallace was treated for minor injuries by paramedics.

The women were cited and released on misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and criminal damage.

Given the increasing pro-abortion violence, the 40 Days for Life campaign takes on an added edge. But we will not be bullied into hiding.

Pro-Choice Violence: Alleged hit and run

At a Rockford, Illinois, abortion facility an employee allegedly struck with his car a homeless man praying with pro-life protesters Wednesday, and drove away, according to witnesses at the scene.

The vehicle reportedly struck Scott Griffin on Wednesday as it drove into the driveway of the abortion facility, where pro-lifers say workers frequently drive recklessly in an apparent attempt to intimidate those praying and handing out pro-life literature.

"The dark colored SUV the clinic worker was driving hit Scott Griffin with the mirror on the passenger side so hard the mirror was slammed back into the vehicle and Mr. Griffin was stunned and bruised," Rockford pro-life veteran Kevin Rilott said.

"After the clinic worker hit him she didn't slow down or stop to see how he was - she just kept going."

Another witness, George Lambert, said the female clinic worker "really nailed the guy hard - I couldn't believe she didn't even stop to see how he was."

City Attorney Kerry Partridge refused to comment on whether any suspects had been questioned or charged, saying only that the case is still under investigation.

Pro-Choice Violence: Threatening with a Gun

Another incident of threatened violence against a pro-lifer.

Outside a Phoenix Planned Parenthood abortion center on Wednesday an Arizona man pulled a gun on a pro-life advocate who handed him a brochure with information on alternatives to abortion.

Phoenix police Lt. Larry T. Jacobs said in a television interview that the man had just dropped off his girlfriend for an abortion at Planned Parenthood - the billion-dollar abortion business - when the pro-life advocate handed the man the brochure. The man pulled out a gun and pointed it at the woman for a few seconds, then got in his vehicle and drove off.

The pro-lifer wrote down the gunman's license plate and report it to authorities. Police eventually arrested the alleged defendant.

The woman says she was only trying to help the man consider other options.

Maybe because of media distortions about "violent pro-lifers" the man felt threatened. Or maybe he was embarrassed, ashamed or feeling guilty about what he was doing. Only he - and God - knows.

More Reports of Pro-Abortion Violence

Pewsitter.com interviewed Fr. Tom Euteneuer, of Human Life International, about pro-choice violence. Here are some of his responses:

In the days when I was more actively doing sidewalk counseling, I was threatened with death twice by abortion clinic workers, threatened with physical harm numerous times by boyfriends and others who accompanied women to the clinic and several times I was assaulted by people in vehicles trying to run me over. The verbal harassment is too numerous and gross to recount, especially when directed against a man of the cloth. ...

In Kenya an abortionist tried to poison our director;
in Mexico, the HLI director found a knife covered with red blood-like liquid stuck in his couch with a message to stay out of abortion;
in Austria the anti-lifers have sued our affiliate (without success) and the city government of Vienna created special laws against them;
in the Philippines there are attacks against the character of our pro-life people and one parliamentarian called for the deportation of HLI’s Dr. Brian Clowes when he did a speaking tour there;
in Ecuador our affiliate leader was threatened with death, satanic graffiti was put on the door of a church against us, the severed head of a dog was thrown into a church with a desecrated Sacred Host in its mouth. ...

There has only been intimidation of family members like my father who stands in front of the local Planned Parenthood. It is regular fare: he has insults hurled at him and bottles thrown from cars. ...

The behaviors have always been irrational, but the new element seems to be an occult element that I believe we will see more in the future. “Death-scorts” seem to be more prone to curse and "pray" against pro-lifers probably due to so many of them being involved in New Age and witchcraft. Some of it is overt and some not. The abortion clinic owner in Rockford, IL periodically comes out of his place dressed in a devil outfit, for example. He also puts blasphemous images of Jesus and religion in the window of the clinic. One abortionist in FL some years ago shook blood from his abortion instruments on the pro-lifers after a morning of killing. We will see much more of this in time.
