View from the choir

I am a Catholic layperson and Secular Franciscan with a sense of humor. After years in the back pew watching, I have moved into the choir. It's nice to see faces instead of the backs of heads. But I still maintain God has a sense of humor - and that we are created in God's image.

haiku "purists"

The old pond -
a frog jumps in,
sound of water (Basho, translated by Robert Haas)

Basho's no master -
translated his "haiku" fails
5-7-5 test.

(Posted in response to a "purist" who said a haiku is not a haiku unless it follows the rules he was taught years ago.)

What would he make of my "lo-kus" -- epics in 5-7-5?

Ten years of slaughter,
Gods sport -- men die, city burns,
And for what? Helen?

With Virgil, toured Hell.
Perversity's not so bad,
Treason? No THAT'S Hell!

Thirty went riding
to Cantebury. Each wi
his horse, each wi his tale.

Oh, and you might appreciate the Arcata (California) Eye (http://www.arcataeye.com/) which sometimes puts their police reports into limericks or haiku:

Down and not breathing
At first they thought he was dead
Nope, just stupid drunk.

A Union Street neighbor and loafer
Refused to get up off a sofa
Cops circled the couch
Held talks with the slouch
And soon from the home he was chauffeured.

¡Saludos!
